My Bruin Article - Analysis

Two weeks ago, my class read the article written on me in The Daily Bruin,  back in February. The class got into groups of approximately 6 or 7 and took turns reading the article aloud. I asked them to read this article and pay attention to the nuances in the text. Ironically nuance is one of the vocabulary words in the SAT Vocabulary Manual that I use as a reference to tie in English and Vocab, since this is an English AP class.

Anyhow, these students broke the article all up and down. I was accused of selling out by one student as she criticized my approach or portrayal in this permanant text. Another student gave me props for basically "keeping it real" and that my story is important and encourages other students to recognize they can do it too. A young man said, " Everyone has a past!" How profound!

I told the class that during the interview I mentioned I'm participating in an residency at Jordan High School in Watts, but instead they printed "an inner city school". I just found this so disrespectful. Where was the shout out for my kids? Inner city school- this is the problem.

Amazing feedback from the kids! That was a very revealing idea to put yourself, and the representation of yourself in the article, up for analysis. It was good to her the variety of responses and analysis from your students, and your own analysis of the article too.
